Springfield, Mass. - March 25, 2019 - After leading the Springfield College baseball team to five wins last week, sophomore Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.) and senior Brian Johnson (East Haddam, Conn.) were recognized by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) as conference athletes of the week, announced on Monday afternoon.
Cooney, a sophomore Applied Exercise Science major at Springfield College, was selected as the NEWMAC Baseball Athlete of the Week following a dominant week at the dish for the Pride, while Johnson, a senior Sport Management major at Springfield College, was named the NEWMAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week after throwing his second-career no hitter versus Emerson on Sunday.
Cooney had quite the week for the Pride as he produced a batting average of .423, going 11-for-26 at the plate with 11 RBI, seven runs scored and three walks. Cooney, an everyday outfielder for the maroon and white, also stole 11 bases on the week, including a career-best four stolen bases in an 11-5 win over Emerson on Sunday afternoon.
Johnson, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Pride, had an impressive week as he became the only student-athlete in the Springfield College baseball program's Division III history to throw multiple no hitters in a career, as he picked up his first win of the season on Sunday, a no-hit effort against Emerson. Against the Lions, Johnson was hitless through nine innings, as he also struck out nine batters on the afternoon, including the first three of the game. With this outing, Johnson now leads the NEWMAC in strikeouts per game (11.44).
