Late Run Lifts Baseball Past Keene State, 5-4, in Non-Conference Play

Springfield, Mass. - April 11, 2019 - Senior Cam Rivest (Agawam, Mass.) scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Pride held on in the top of the ningth as he Springfield College baseball team bested Keene State College, 5-4 in non-conference action at Archie Allen Field on Thursday afternoon.

With the win the Pride improves to 14-11 on the season, while the Owls drop to 7-14 overall.

Sophomores Nick Fazio (Kings Park, N.Y.), Jack Cooney (Pittsfield, Mass.), and Eduardo Martinez (Southwick, Mass.) were all able to pick up two hits for Springfield College to highlight the win for the Pride. Mitch Wright (Clifton Park, N.Y.) made his fourth start on the bump for the Pride, and was able to settle in on the mound over six innings of work, striking out six and conceding just six hits.

Wright got into some early trouble, surrendering three runs over the first two innings of work, and in the seventh, freshman Ben Arnold (Deerfield, Mass.) took the ball in relief of Wright and forced a pair of outs. Sophomore John Daley (Huntington, Mass.) took over for the freshman with the bases loaded to get the final out of the inning, needing just one pitch to induce a shallow fly out to center. Daley would hold on in the ninth to confirm the decision and earn his first-career win at Springfield College.

Springfield got on the board in the second inning after Fazio was able to drop a fly ball in front of the center fielder, before Martinez was able to lace a ball through the middle to score Fazio, bringing the game to 3-1 in favor of the Owls. Ryan Smith (Millis, Mass.) was able to get in on the action when he poked a ball to right field, moving Martinez to third with two outs. Keene State was able to come up big with a out to end the inning and preserve the two-run lead.

The Pride continued to hit the ball well as Cooney got a ball down the right-field line and legged out a double to put him in scoring position to start off the third. Jack Simonetty (Wappingers Fall, N.Y.) drove home Cooney with a hard-hit grounder up the middle, before a walk and a bunt single from Fazio brought up Jason Bean (Middleboro, Mass.) with the bases loaded. Bean and Rivest would work back-to-back walks to put the Pride up by one and bring Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.)  to the dish. Russo would put a good swing on a fastball, but the right fielder was able to corral it and end the inning with the Pride up 4-3.

An error in the next half inning would prove costly as it would enable the Owls to tie the game back up at four apiece after five and a half frames. The Pride would finally break the tie when Rivest was able to single on a bunt, steal a base, and eventually score on a passed ball to put the Pride up 5-4 in the eighth, which ended up being the deciding run of the contest.

The Pride will open its second New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) West Division series on Friday, April 12 when Springfield College travels to Worcester, Mass. to face Clark at 3:30 p.m.
