Northampton, Mass. - October 25, 2014 - The Springfield College field hockey team picked up a critical New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon as it bested Smith College, 2-1 behind goals from Olivia Cabral (Sayville, N.Y.) and Katie Gill (Wallingford, Conn.)
Down 1-0 with under 10 minutes left in regulation after a first-half goal from Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass.), Gill notched her sixth goal of the season with 6:26 remaining in the contest to even the game at one goal apiece.
Just 2:19 later, Cabral notched her second game-winning goal of the week and ninth goal of the season to give the Pride a 2-1 lead in the late minutes of the game. The Pride would hold off the Smith attack for the remainder of the game, finishing the contest with the one-goal margin.
The Pride improves to 7-8 on the season, but more importantly, now stands at 3-4 in NEWMAC play. Junior goalkeeper Timarie Villa (Mashpee, Mass.) finished the contest not needing to make a save to claim the victory, as the Pioneers only mustered 10 shots over the course of the game, while Springfield dominated possession, putting forth 30 shots on Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass.), who finished with 12 stops of her own. The Pride held a 15-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Springfield will play its final non-conference game of the season next Tuesday when it travels to Salem State for a 4:00 pm clash.
