Men’s Basketball Handles Mitchell, 84-48, in Eastern Connecticut Invitational

Willimantic, Conn. – November 21, 2008 – The Springfield College men’s basketball team outscored Mitchell by 25 points in the second half as it cruised to a 84-48 victory in its opening game of the Eastern Connecticut State Invitational on Friday evening.

With the win, the Pride improve to 3-1 on the season, while Mitchell drops to 1-1. In the win, 13 different players for Springfield notched at least two points.

Springfield will take on Eastern Connecticut in the championship game on Saturday afternoon. Eastern Connecticut cruised to a 40-point win over New England College on Friday evening.

For the Pride, Ryan Blackmon continued to lead the way on offense as he tallied 14 points. Freshman Anthony Epps came off the bench to post a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The athletic wing tallied seven offensive boards to go along with three steals and two assists in 22 minutes of action. Ryan Coburn continued to make an impact in his first year in the Maroon and White as he registered 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

John Strawson was the only other member of the Pride to score in double figures as he tallied 10 points in the victory. Danny White was all over the court as the senior point guard notched a sensational seven steals to go along with six points.

The first half was back and forth until the Pride was finally able to break it open with a 14-2 run to close the opening stanza. SC went into the locker room with an 11-point lead.

Springfield, which outscored Mitchell 48-23 in the second half, took advantage of 25 Mitchell turnovers. Springfield finished the game with 32 points off Mitchell turnovers as it posted 18 steals in the win. The Pride also had a tremendous advantage on the glass, as it notched 17 more rebounds in the game, including a 26-14 advantage on the offensive glass.
