Chicago, Ill. - November 17, 2018 - The Springfield College men's basketball team lost for the first time this season by virtue of an 80-66 setback to Ohio Wesleyan at the University of Chicago's Midway Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Pride, which was ranked No. 7 in the most recent D3hoops.com National Poll, fell to 2-1 on the year. Springfield will conclude their trip to the Midwest at 12 pm EST against Claremont Mudd Scripps.
Heath Post (Cheshire, Conn.) did a little bit of everything for the Pride in the setback, totaling 25 points and eight rebounds, while Kevin Durkin (Worcester, Mass.) pulled down a team-best 10 boards. Springfield was limited to 37% shooting from the floor, going 20-for-53, and just 6-of-17 from deep. The Pride held a 41-33 edge on the glass, but committed 17 turnovers.
Ohio Wesleyan drilled 16 three-pointers in the victory and had five players with at least nine points.
After Post knocked down a triple just under three minutes into the game to give the Pride a 6-5 edge, Ohio Wesleyan poured on a 17-5 run over the next eight-plus minutes to take a commanding 22-9 advantage.
Springfield would trail by as many as 22 points midway through the second half at 58-36, but would put together a sensational run, pulling within 67-61 when Trey Witter (Unionville, Conn.) knocked down a pair from the line with 4:06 remaining. However, OWU responded with a triple on the ensuing possession to gain the breathing room they would need to pull away with the 14-point win.
