Cranston, R.I. - April 6, 2019 - In their first tournament of the spring season, the Springfield College golf team finished sixth at the Rhode Island College Invitational held at the Valley Country Club.
Johnson & Wales won the two-day event with a team score of 627, edging Endicott and Tufts who tied for second with a 631. Western New England took fourth with a 633, UMass Dartmouth turned in a 636, while the Pride totaled a score of 642 after back-to-back rounds of 321 as it outdistanced seventh-place Roger Williams by 13 strokes.
A day after shooting a 78, Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) posted a 77 on Saturday to finish tied for fifth among the 73 golfers in the event. Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.) was Springfield's next-best finisher as he carded an 80 on Saturday for a two-day score of 162, while Doug Shane (Hamden, Conn.) also shot an 80 to complete his weekend with a score of 165. Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) was right behind Shane with a 166 as his tournament was highlighted by a 76 on Friday afternoon. First-year Corey Roya (Manchester, Conn.) rounded out Springfield's scoring with an 84 on Saturday for a two-day score of 170.
Next up for Springfield will be the Wildcats Spring Invitational, which will be hosted by Johnson & Wales on April 13-14.
