Golf Sits In Sixth After Opening Round of Detrick Invitational

Newington, Conn. - September 7, 2019 - Competing for the first time this season, the Springfield College golf team put together a strong opening round at the Bill Detrick Invitational on Saturday at Indian Hill Country Club.

As a team, Springfield combined for 316 strokes in their opening day of competition and is in sixth among the 10 teams in the field.   Babson leads the competition through the opening day after firing a 288 as four players shot 74 or better.  Trinity is in second with a 296, followed by Tufts (299), Amherst (300), and Western New England (31) to round out the top five.  Trailing Springfield is is Manhattanville (319), Wesleyan (322), Trinity (327), and Elms (344). 

Playing in his hometown, Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) led Springfield with a 76, while Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.) carded a 78 in his first round of the season.  Doug Shane (Hamden, Conn.) added a 79 and Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) turned in an 83. 

In their first collegiate action, Nicholas DeMaio (West Springfield, Mass.) registered an 87 and Aidan McBride (Ludlow, Mass.) posted an 88.
