West Boyleston, Mass. - October 5, 2019 - The Springfield College golf team got off to a fast start in their quest of winning the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Golf Championship on Saturday and sit in first after the opening round at Wachusett Country Club.
Springfield combined to shot a 300 on Saturday and has a six-stroke lead on Westfield State, which is in second with a 307. Salem State sits in third with a 309, followed by Worcester State (328), Elms (331), Mitchell (334), Dean (354), MCLA (366), and Eastern Nazarene (381).
Springfield's Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) put together the best round of the 44 golfers in the opening round as he turned in an even-par score of 72. Strong managed five birdies on the day, including four on the front nine as he went out in a 34. Teammate Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, Pa.) is currently second overall after a first-round score of 73, as he also managed five birdies on the day, including a pair in the final four holes.
Corey Roya (Manchester, Conn.) is tied for seventh with a 76 after producing seven pars in his round, while first-year Aidan McBride (Ludlow, Mass.) shot a 79 in his first championship experience as he was just one-over par on the back nine. Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) rounded out Springfield's scoring with an 80 on the day, despite being just one-over at the turn.
After winning the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship a season ago, Springfield will look to claim the MASCAC title on Sunday. Action begins at 10:30.
