Syracuse, N.Y. - March 7, 2018 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team fell to top-ranked RIT, 23-7, on Wednesday afternoon, a game that was hosted in Syracuse University's Carrier Dome.
With the loss, the Pride has now dropped two straight to fall to 1-2 on the year, while RIT improves to 3-0 with the victory. The Tigers owned a 50-38 shot advantage over 60 minutes of play, while RIT also won the ground-ball battle, 50-20. RIT's Nate Farrell (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was instrumental in the Tigers' fast start, as he was a perfect 14-for-14 in the face-off "x", while Springfield College's Joe Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) was just 10-for-26 on the day. In net, senior goalkeeper Jake Reynolds (Scituate, Mass.) made 12 stops, while Cole Finerty (Kensington, N.H.) came on for the fourth quarter and notched three saves.
Leading the Pride offensively was Duncan Preston (South Portland, Maine), as the senior midfielder notched three points on a goal and two assists, while Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) recorded a pair of goals in the setback.
RIT scored the game's first goal just 53 seconds into the contest as Brendan McDonald (Georgetown, Ontario) found an open Ryan Barnable (Whitby, Ontario) for an easy catch-and-finish, before Barnable found the back of the net again at the 10:09 mark to push the Tigers lead to a pair. Trailing 3-0 after a goal from RIT's Shawn Nally (Rochester, N.Y.) with 6:13 to play, the Pride broke a 10-man ride on a nice play from senior defenseman Connor Eschmann (Wrentham, Mass.), before Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) found an open Tommy Nash (Massapequa, N.Y.) for an empty-net goal to make it 3-1, Tigers, at the 5:17 mark of the opening frame, a score that would stand until the end of the first quarter.
Julian Guay (Oakville, Ontario) gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead just 2:44 into the second quarter, initiating a 12-goal period for RIT. Behind the impressive work of Farrell, the Tigers scored three goals in a span of 2:29 to take a 10-1 lead over the Pride. Springfield's defense was able to contain RIT until the 5:27 mark, but a goal from Chris Brown (Homer, N.Y.) sparked a three-goal spurt from the Tigers, making it 13-1 before two more goals from the hosts gave the Tigers a 15-1 lead at the half.
RIT scored the first five goals of the third quarter to make it 20-1, before Preston buried a feed from Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) with 20 seconds to play in the quarter to make it 20-2 after three periods.
Hawley buried a shot just eight seconds into the fourth to make it 20-3, but RIT answered with a strike from Adam Wolf (Oakville, Ontario to maintain a 17-goal lead. The Pride put together a three-goal run of their own, including markers from Matt Allen (Chevy Chase, Md.), Cameron Glover (Brunswick, Maine) and Anthony Sullivan (Westfield, Mass.) in a span of 3:58, before Hawley converted on a man-up play with 2:32 left to wrap up Springfield College's offensive performance.
