Springfield, Mass. – October 26, 2011Drew Sommer scored the game’s only goal in the 53rd minute to lift the Springfield College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Western Connecticut State on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield snapped its three-game slide to improve to 9-4-3, while WestConn drops to 1-13-2 mark.

Springfield broke through in the 53rd minute for the game’s only goal. Alex Reilly carried the ball towards the end line on the left flank and delivered a diagonal feed into the box to a wide open Sommer. Sommer ran on the ball with pace and blasted a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Brett Bascom and Chris Walton combined to post Springfield’s seventh clean sheet of the season. Bascom made three saves in 70 minutes of action, while Walton had one save. Jack Holub took the loss for the visitors after notching six saves.

Walton came up big with his one stop as WestConn made a late push in the waning moments. With three seconds remaining, Matthew Martin connected on a shot from the top of the box that skidded towards Walton. The junior keeper initially bobbled the ball loose in the box, only to corral it as the final horn blew.

Springfield finished the contest with a 16-11 advantage in shots, including a 9-5 edge in the second half. Western Connecticut took seven corner kicks to the hosts five.

With the Pride’s regular season finished, it will now await results from around the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) this weekend to determine its seed for the upcoming conference tournament. The Pride could be seeded either second, third, or fourth depending on certain results.
