Men’s Soccer Handles Elms, 6-3

Springfield, Mass. – September 10, 2011 – Six different players scored goals in the first half en route to a 6-3 victory for the Springfield College men’s soccer team over Elms College on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.

Springfield moves to 3-0-1 on the season, while the visiting Blazers drop to 1-2 overall. The Pride dominated at the offensive end in the first half, outshooting Elms 17-6. The final shot count was 17-16 in favor of Springfield, as the Pride eased up their offensive attack in the second half.

The Pride scored three times within the game’s first 20 minutes to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead. Just over 13 minutes into the contest, Jake Miskin took the ball up the left side before sending one past the Blazer goalie into the right half of the net.

Springfield added another goal less than three minutes later. Scott Saucier stole the ball and dribbled twice to set himself before firing a 30-yarder into the top right corner of the net. The third goal for the hosts came 19:29 into the first half, when Drew Vanasse lifted a shot past the charging Blazer goalie for the Pride’s third-straight score.

Elms battled back in front of Springfield’s net, chipping into the Pride lead when Adam O’Grady converted a Springfield turnover into a goal in the 23rd minute.

The Pride quickly recovered from the Elms’ score, resuming their offensive pressure in the 26th minute as Drew Sommer tucked one into the Elms net.

The next Springfield strike came in the 40th minute, when Miskin added an assist to his previous goal on a nice lead pass to John Mankus for the score. Freshman Mike Desroches rounded out the Springfield scoring attack with a goal in the 43rd minute.

The Blazers got back on the board in the 79th minute when Thomas Rivers threaded the needle to Tavish Leland for the goal. Leland added a second goal on a diving header in the 81st minute, leaning into a Jonathan Coyne cross and bouncing it past Springfield goalie Chris Walton to make the score 6-3.

Walton tallied the win for the Pride while Elms goalie Ryan Sullivan suffered the loss for the visitors. Sullivan recorded seven saves to Walton’s six.
