Men's Soccer Earns 2-0 Conference Victory Over Clark

Springfield, Mass. - September 29, 2018 - In a rematch of last season's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Semifinals, the Springfield College men's soccer team defeated Clark, 2-0, at Brock-Affleck Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride improves to 7-3 overall with a 2-1 mark in conference play, while the Cougars fall to 8-2 on the year with a 1-2 record against league opponents.

Freshman forward Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) found the back of the net twice in the contest to lead the Pride to victory, as in goal for the Pride, Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) made three stops in the win. His counterpart, Melvin Vincent (Rochester, Mass.) made six saves in the loss for the Cougars.

Springfield College limited Clark's potent offense to just 14 shots in 90 minutes of play, three of which were on net, while the Pride had 16 shots and put eight of them on cage. The maroon and white also held a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks in the win.

Clark was granted the first scoring opportunity of the game when Connor Ross (Atkinson, N.H.) drilled a shot off the right post just 1:03 into the contest, before Daniel Moura (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) had a shot just 1:43 later that was blocked by the Springfield College defense.

The Pride had a flurry of chances midway through the opening half as Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) had a bid turned away by Vincent, before Brad Deckel (Lansdale, Pa.) received a corner kick from Keith Dixon (Amherst, Mass.) and missed just high of the net to keep the game scoreless.

Springfield College had two more chances in the 32nd minute of the contest as Tyler Maider (Seattle, Wash.) and Joseph Olaynack (Middletown, R.I.) had back-to-back shots on goal, before Deckel sent another opportunity off of a corner kick just high of the cross bar.

Opening the second half, Ma had a shot on goal saved by Vincent just 8:40 into the frame, before the freshman was able to get in clean behind the Clark defense on a pass from Emmanuel Agyemang (East Hartford, Conn.) and chip a shot past Vincent to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

Springfield College had another chance in the 75th minute when Freddy Clark (Glastonbury, Conn.) got in behind the defense, but Vincent was able to make an acrobatic save to keep the Cougars' deficit at one.

Springfield's back line held tough throughout the late rally from the Cougars, as in the final minute of the game, Schneider picked up a loose ball at the midfield with numbers in transition, drew a defender and found Adrian Avellaneda (Baltimore, Md.), who slipped a pass to Ma for an empty-net goal to seal the 2-0 win for the Pride.

The Pride will return to Brock-Affleck Field on Tuesday, October 2 when it hosts Framingham State at 7 p.m. in non-conference play.
