Springfield, Mass. – January 11, 2010 – After leading the Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team to victories over Hartwick and Union, both Andrew Blakesley and Brian Sobel were honored for their efforts by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Blakesley was named the conference’s male swimmer of the week, while Sobel earned men’s diver of the week honors.
A local product from West Springfield, Mass., Blakesley continued to swim well for the Pride as he paced Springfield in the pool on Saturday afternoon. The junior had another solid performance earning victories in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.39, and the 500 free in 4:33.06. Blakesley also joined the 400 free relay team to top the field in a time of 3:19.14.
The reigning NEWMAC Diver of the Year, Sobel returned to the Springfield diving squad after battling an injury in the first half of the season. In his first meet back, the Stratford, Conn. native scored 260.35 points to claim the one-meter crown, and then also won the three-meter with 310.70 points.
The Pride will now prepare for an important and busy weekend as it will swim three of the top teams in the region. On Saturday, Springfield will travel to the Big Apple to square off against NYU. The following day, SC will head home to host a tri-meet with Coast Guard and MIT, who is currently ranked fifth in the country.
