Men’s Swimming and Diving Kicks Off Season With 167-127 Win Over Holy Cross

Springfield, Mass. – October 30, 2010 – The Springfield College men’s swimming and diving team opened the 2010-2011 season with a home victory over Holy Cross in the Art Linkletter Natatorium on Saturday afternoon. The Pride outscored the Division I opponent 167-127.

The Pride started the meet off strong, taking the 200 yard medley relay to open the event. The four-man team of Josh Ernst, Eric Scala, Scott Mackstutis, and Mike DeMellia won with a time of 1:41.20. Mackstutis, Ernst, Scott Peters, and Jason Scotto fared well in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing in 1:30.96.

Springfield also saw multiple event winners in Mackstutis and Nolan Manley. Mackstutis dominated the 100 yard events, touching first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.55, and in the 100 free in 49.54. Manley edged out DeMellia in the 50 yard free with a time of 22.81, and would go on to win the 500 yard free in 5:03.59.

Others that swam well for the Pride included freshman Alex Jensen, who won the 1000 yard freestyle in 10:36.70, to start his collegiate career. Scotto was victorious in the 200 free in 1:51.77, while Tim Ramos took the 200 butterfly in 2:04.98.

In diving, the Pride’s Brooks Farrar completed the sweep in his first meet for Springfield after transferring in from Middlebury. In the one-meter event, Farrar scored 305.07 and in the three-meter, he totaled a score of 309.38. With his scores, Farrar met the national qualifying marks on both boards.

The Pride men will be back at home next Saturday to host the University of Rhode Island at 1:00 pm.
