Hartwick, N.Y. - January 12, 2019 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team split a tri-meet with Hartwick and Union on Saturday afternoon. The Pride eased past Union by the score of 173-121, but was bested by host Hartwick, 187-111.
The meet started off with the 200 medley relay, and the unit of Sean Harnish (Middlebury, Conn.), Anthony Soares (Worcester, Mass.), Andy Endress (Belchertown, Mass.), and Vladimir Burnin (Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Oblast, Russia) finished second in 1:41.51.
Nicholas Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) won the 1,000 free by nearly four seconds after turning in a 10:17.62 and later took second in the 500 free in 5:03.00. Sean Mitchell (Canton, Mass.) sprinted to a win in the 50 free in 22.87, while Harnish scored first-place points in the 200 back after winning in 2:02.37.
On the one-meter board, Connor Pennington (Monson, Mass.) cruised to a win by 40 points as he posted a national-qualifying mark of 329.70. The sophomore was also victorious on the three-meter with a 283.85.
In the 200 free, Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.) took third in 1:50.42, delivered a 2:07.49 in the 200 fly, and swam a 2:09.39 in the 200 IM, while Harnish recorded a 54.34 in the 100 fly.
Christopher Schreiner (Fairfield, Conn.) had the Pride's best showing in the 100 back with a 59.72, and Soares clocked in at 1:04.43 in the 100 breast. Mitchell was third in the 100 free with a 50.47 and Michael Allo (Newington, Conn.) completed the 200 breast in 2:19.23.
Concluding the afternoon, Jensen, Mitchell, Smith, and Harnish swam the 400 free relay in 3:21.98.
Next Saturday, Springfield will host Wesleyan and Roger Williams in a tri-meet at the Art Linkletter Natatorium.
