Springfield, Mass. – April 22, 2009 – Both Cal Palumbo and Eric Shoemaker were honored as Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) All-Conference selections on Wednesday afternoon. The duo were two of 10 players selected to the all-conference second team after impressive campaigns for the Pride this season.
The Pride play in the EIVA Conference, which is comprised of 12 teams, seven of which are either Division I or Division II institutions. Thus, Shoemaker and Palumbo’s selections are quite impressive as out of a possible 20 all-conference selections between the first and second teams, only seven were Division III student-athletes.
Palumbo, who hails from Rochester, N.Y., was also named to the All-America First Team for the second straight season after earning the honor in his freshman season. Last season’s AVCA Division III Newcomer of the Year, Palumbo continued to dominate this season as one of the Pride’s middle hitters. This season, Palumbo led the team with a .435 hitting percentage as he racked up 206 kills. He also added 98 total blocks, including 88 block assists for the season. Palumbo sits among the NCAA Division III leaders in hitting percentage and blocks per game, while participating in the Division I dominated EIVA Tait Division.
While directing the Pride’s attack in his junior season, Shoemaker also earned All-America Second Team honors for the first time as well this year. A junior from Mount Wolf, Pa., Shoemaker is among the nations leaders in assists, blocks and digs per game and helped the Pride earn a berth in the upcoming EIVA Tournament. He has handed out 952 assists this season, recorded 133 digs, and posted 84 blocks.
The Pride will next return to action on Saturday evening at 7:00 pm when it hosts the winner of the George Mason/Harvard match in an EIVA Tournament Quarterfinal match.
