Lexington, Ky. - February 2, 2016 - Springfield College junior Luis Vega (Corozal, Puerto Rico) has been chosen as the Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III National Player of the Week after a pair of outstanding performances for the Pride last week.
This is the 25th time a student-athlete from Springfield has garnered Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week honors, and the third in Vega's career that he has been honored. He previously earned the award in consecutive weeks from April 1-8 in 2014.
The Physical Education major had a dominant showing on Saturday as he totaled 31 kills at a .725 clip to go along with 10 digs, five aces, and five blocks.
In a four-set win over Vassar, Vega recorded 21 kills with a .769 hitting percentage while adding five blocks and as many digs, includind totaling nine kills on nine errorless attempts swings in the fourth set. Vega followed up that performance with 10 kills and a .643 hitting percentage in helping lead Springfield to a three-game sweep of Ramapo.
Vega and the Pride will play on Tuesday evening when they travel to face Emmanuel. First serve is slated for 8:00 pm.
