Springfield, Mass. - April 11, 2018 - The Springfield College softball team split a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contests with Coast Guard on Wednesday afternoon at Potter Field. The Pride took the first game, 3-1, before falling to the Bears, 7-5, in game two.
With the split, the Pride is now 16-6 overall and 4-4 in the league, while Coast Guard is also 16-6 on the year with a 7-3 mark against conference opponents.
Next, Springfield College will return to Potter Field on Friday, April 11 when it hosts two with Clark at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Springfield College 3, Coast Guard 1 -- Game One
Springfield College rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Coast Guard, 3-1, in the first of two games on Wednesday afternoon. Yaixsa Vargas (Waterbury, Conn.) had a pair of RBI in the inning, while Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) also drove in Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) with a single up the middle. Senior pitcher Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) improved to 8-3 in the victory as she pitched 7.0 innings, giving up five hits and striking out three.
Coast Guard picked up the game's first run in the top of the sixth when Kayla Sowers (Rocklin, Calif.) scored on a passed ball, but facing a 1-0 deficit, Springfield College sparked a rally in the bottom of the sixth as Allen reached on an error, before Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice.
Taking advantage of their opportunity, Conley singled up the middle to plate Allen, before Vargas roped a pinch-hit double to left center, scoring Wheeler and Conley to take a 3-1 lead over the Bears.
Taking the field in the top of the seventh, Loda was able to seal the win as she picked up the final three outs.
Coast Guard 7, Springfield College 5 - Game Two
Springfield College jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over Coast Guard in the bottom of the first inning when Wheeler singled to center to score Kirsten Drobiak (Griswold, Conn.), before Conley knocked a base hit into center field, pushing Wheeler and Vargas across home.
Coast Guard got one back in the top of the second when Casey Cruzpino (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) doubled to right field, scoring Sowers from first to make it 3-1, Pride. The Bears would tack on two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBI from Cruzpino and Malia Hindle (Seaville, N.J.) to even the score at three apiece.
Springfield College regained a two-run lead in the bottom half of the fourth as Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) reached on an error which allowed Kayla Padroff (Southington, Conn.) and Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) to score, making it 5-3, Springfield College.
Facing a two-run deficit in the top of the seventh, the Bears rallied for four runs in the frame, including a base-clearing double from Emily Hogan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to lift Coast Guard to victory.
