Cambridge, Mass. - May 4, 2018 - Playing in an elimination game of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament, the Springfield College softball team fell to WPI, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Briggs Field.
With the loss, the Pride, which was the No. 4 seed in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament, caps its season with a record of 26-13, while WPI advances to take on Coast Guard with a record of 28-12.
Senior pitcher Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) took the loss as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five, while her counterpart, Kelsey Saucer (Worcester, Mass.) improved to 12-4 as she threw 4.0 innings, giving up just one earned run. Nicole Kuberka (Los Angeles, Calif.) came on an picked up the final nine outs, holding the Pride to just three hits while also striking out one.
Sophomore Yaixsa Vargas (Waterbury, Conn.) led the way for the Pride offensively, as she drove in the two Springfield runs, including a solo home run, her fourth of the season, in the top of the third inning.
Springfield College got things going in the top of the first when Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) opened the game with a single, before stealing a pair of bases to get to third. With Vargas up at the plate, the sophomore high a fly ball to right, which was caught, allowing Gasdia to tag and score, granting the Pride with a 1-0 lead.
Vargas doubled Springfield College's lead in the top of the third with a home run to center field, but WPI would answer with three in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-run single off the bat of Cassie Graca (Somerset, Mass.) to lift the Engineers to victory.
