Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - November 23, 2019 - The Springfield College women's basketball program came up short 72-63 to Vassar College on Saturday night at the Vassar College Athletics and Fitness Center.
The Pride dropped their third straight contest and now even out at 3-3. Vassar College improve to 3-1 on the year. Springfield pulled down 13 offensive rebounds in the setback.
The Pride were led by senior guard Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) , who finished with 17 points, three rebounds, and a pair of steals. Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) contributed 10 points and nine rebounds. Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) pulled down 13 rebounds in the setback.
Vassar College had five players score in double figures in the victory. Isa Peczuh led the Brewers with 14 points. Sophie Nick scored 10 points and hauled in 18 rebounds in the win.
The Brewers came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring the Pride 24-10. Vassar College shot 9-of-20 from the field for 45% for the quarter. With 1:04 remaining, Jacques converted on a pair of free throws to make the score 18-10. The Brewers finished the quarter scoring six straight points to push their lead to 24-10.
In the second quarter, the Brewers continued to grow their lead to 30-17 after a layup from Sarah Gilhooly to make the deficit 13 for the Pride. In the first half, Springfield would get as close as nine before the half, but Vassar would convert on a run to extend their first half lead to 39-28.
The Pride came out of the locker room aggressive and narrowed the gap in the third quarter. With 3:45 remaining in the period, Amanda Carr (West Haven, Conn.) laid in a feed from Stephanie Lyons (Braintree, Mass.) to slim the deficit to 43-37. Another small run would give the Brewers a 12 point cushion with 1:41 remaining, but Rachel Vinton (Holden, Mass.) would spark a quick six-point spurt to bring the score back to 49-43.
At 6:10 in the fourth quarter, the Pride finally regained the lead after Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.) got in the paint and scored in traffic to give Springfield the 53-52 advantage. From there, both teams would trade baskets with the margin just with two points. At 3:38, Jacques would find a cutting Goslin to give the Pride a 58-56 lead, but Vassar would respond with a three-pointer from Peczuh to regain the lead for the host. A late three-pointer from Rudolph would cut it to one, but the Brewers finished the contest on a 13-5 run en route to a 72-63 victory.
Springfield returns to action on Tuesday, November 26 against NESCAC foe Williams College at 5 pm.
