Southern Conn Wins Women’s Gymnastics Meet at SC with MIT

Springfield, Mass. — February 20, 2011 — The Southern Connecticut State University women’s gymnastics team defeated Springfield College and MIT in a meet that took place this afternoon at Blake Arena. The Owls placed first with 187.975 points, followed by Springfield at 182.975, and MIT at 139.475.

Springfield’s score was its best of the year, surpassing the 181.400 it amassed at Ithaca on January 30.

In the all-around, two competitors tied for first with scores of 37.100. They were Springfield College sophomore Brittany Baglow (Amherst, Mass.) and SCSU junior Mallory Miller (Southbury, Conn.). MIT took third through sixth with Zara Karuman (36.400), Lindsay Sanneman (34.875), Kristen Watkins (34.175), and Karis Stevenson (34.025) finishing in that order.

Rebecca Brady of Southern Connecticut had an excellent meet, taking a first in one event, and tying for first in another. A sophomore from Hampstead, N.H., Brady placed first in the vault with a score of 9.525. She also tied for first in the floor exercise at 9.675. She also finished ninth in the balance beam at 8.900.

Baglow had a great meet as well for the Pride. She also tied for first with a 9.675 in the floor exercise, placed fifth in the beam with a score of 9.450, tied for sixth in the vault at 9.275, and was 11th in the bars at 8.700.

For SCSU, Miller placed third in the beam (9.575), fifth in the bars (9.200), tied for eighth in the vault (9.225), and 12th in the floor (9.100).

The other two first-place finishers came from SCSU. They were junior Alanna Laecca (Bethel, Conn.) in the beam at 9.650, and senior Justine Basley (Danielson, Conn.) in the bars at 9.625.

The bars and beam both went SCSU’s way. The Owls took 1 through 5 in the bars, and 1 through 4 in the beam.

Another who did well for Springfield on the day was senior Christina Pagella (Westfield, Mass.). Pagella finished second in the vault (9.450), tied for fourth in the floor (9.525), and finished sixth in the beam (9.100).

Others who did well for SC included sophomore Annemarie Graziosa (Eastchester, N.Y.) in the floor (T4th at 9.525), junior Carly Flynn (Franklin, Mass.) in the vault (T3rd at 9.425), and senior Ashley Moreck (Berlin, Md.) in the bars (6th at 9.100).

On Friday, Feb. 25, the Pride will host its final meet of the year, concluding its regular season, against Rhode Island College in Blake Arena at 7 pm.
