Springfield, Mass.-January 25, 2015- The Springfield College women's gymnastics team defeated visiting Ithaca College, 184.650-183.675, on Sunday in Blake Arena, led by senior captains Lauren Pocius (Wallingford, Conn.) and Abby Clark (Holderness, N.H.), who both put forth standout performances.
The Pride controlled the meet as it claimed three out of the four rotations, including vault, beam and floor exercise.
Pocius earned the top spot in the all-around competition with a score of 37.525 and won the bars with a score of 9.650, and posted the winning mark on the vault with a personal record score of 9.550.
The Pride opened the day sweeping the top four spots on the vault. Sophomore and reigning National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) All-Around Gymnast of the Week Marissa DeAngelo (Brookfield, Conn.) followed Pocius with a score of 9.525, while Clark finished third with a score of 9.500. Freshman Madi Bowen (Sunderland, Mass.) placed fourth with a 9.425.
Clark paced Springfield with a first-place score on the floor exercise, as the senior notched a 9.600. DeAngelo followed suit on the mat as she posted her own personal record of 9.550.
Participating annually in the "Tumble for Teal" meet, the day was dedicated towards raising awareness for gynecological cancer. All proceeds collected in the meet were donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Team Maureen, a group founded in memory of Springfield College gymnast Maureen Duffey ''91. Springfield will compete again next Saturday when it travels to Cortland for a 1:00 pm contest.
