Williamsport, Pa. - January 12, 2019 - The Springfield College wrestling team wrapped up the Budd Whitehill Duals on Saturday and finished in fourth place among the 16 teams in the field.
It marked the first time since 2012 that Springfield had advanced to the championship bracket of the Whitehill Duals, which is in its 29th year of existence. After picking up three wins on Friday, Springfield dopped a pair of outings to nationally-ranked teams on Saturday to finish in fourth place, the fifth such instance in the 14 times that Springfield was wrestled at the Whitehill Duals that they have placed in the top four.
Springfield started off the day versus The College of New Jersey, who was ranked 17th in the most recent NWCA Division III National Poll. After dropping the opening bout at 125 versus the Lions, Springfield's Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) tied things up with a 4-3 decision at 133. However, TCNJ went on to win final eight matchups of the morning, including three major decisions and a pair of technical falls, as it coasted to a 37-3 win.
In the third-place match against York, who was ranked 13th nationally, Nicholas DeRosa (Billerica, Mass.) put Springfield on top as he notched a 12-6 decision at 125. Tolotti earned bonus points with an 11-1 major decision at 133, and the Pride continued to build its lead at 141 after Michael Vietri (Dumont, N.J.) prevailed in overtime, 4-2. York would hit its stride and win the next six bouts, including three by major decisions, to gain a commanding 23-10 lead. Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) ended the weekend on a high note for the Pride as he pinned his opponent in just 3:16 at 285 to conclude the 23-16 setback. For his efforts over the weekend, Fusco was named to the all-tournament team.
Springfield will now turn its attention to a dual versus Norwich, which will be held in Blake Arena on Wednesday night at 6 pm.
