Springfield, Mass. - November 23, 2019 - The Springfield College wrestling team finished sixth at the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday in the Springfield College Field House.
Springfield totaled 88.5 points to finish sixth among the 15 teams in the field. Coast Guard won the title with 141.5 points as the Bears had four individual champions on the day. New England College was the runner up with 102 points, followed by Western England (91), Southern Maine (90.5), and Wesleyan (87).
The Pride had a tremendous showing at 133 pound weight class as they represented all four spots in the semifinals before Chris Trelli (Bristol, Conn.) eventually prevailed with the individual title. In the semifinals, Trelli downed teammate Jacques St. Jean (Goffstown, N.H.) by a 7-3 decision, while Gianni Manginelli (Dumont, N.J.) bested classmate Chase Parrot (Stamford, Conn.) by a score of 5-3. In the finals, Trelli, who was the third-seed, would deliver a 6-2 decision over top-seeded Manginelli, while St. Jean would go on to take third in the weight class.
Michael Vietri (Dumont, N.J.) finished third at 149 as the junior opened up the competition with a pair of major decisions and followed with two more decisions to earn a spot in the semifinals. However, the No. 2 seed in the bracket was then bested in the semifinals, but would benefit from a medical forfeit en route to third place.
The Pride also had two wrestlers finish fourth as Tyson Jones (Albany, N.Y.) and Nicholas Almonte (Cranston, R.I.) had strong performances at 285 and 174, respectively. Tyson had three victories on the day, including a 3-1 decision over third-seeded Harrison Karp from Wesleyan, while Almonte, who was the fifth seed, rattled off three wins to start the competition before dropping his next two bouts to take fourth.
Robert Hartling (Storrs, Conn.) also placed for Springfield on the day, taking sixth at 125.
