Wright's Overtime Strike Lifts Women's Soccer Past Wheaton, 3-2

Springfield, Mass. - October 24, 2018 - Senior forward Amanda Wright (Pittsfield, Mass.) found the back of the net with 5:30 remaining in the first overtime period as the Springfield College women's soccer team defeated Wheaton, 3-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field.

After forcing a turnover at midfield, Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.) split a pair of defenders and slipped a pass to Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.), who found an open Wright in the middle of the field. Wright controlled the ball in the box, evaded the Lyons' goalkeeper Alexa Barbagallo (Bridgewater, N.J.), and finished off her seventh goal of the season to lift the Pride to victory.

With the win, the maroon and white is now 11-4-1 on the year and 7-2 against league opponents, while Wheaton falls to 11-5-1 overall and 4-5 in NEWMAC play. Springfield College held a dominating 33-9 advantage in shots, while the Lyons were awarded three corner kicks to the Pride's two. There was a total of 14 fouls in the contest, nine of which were credited to Wheaton.

In net for the Pride, Jackie Davis (Ringoes, N.J.) made four saves on Wheaton's six shots on goal, while her counterpart, Barbagallo, notched seven stops in the setback.

Springfield College had two shots on goal in the first 10:44 of the contest, including one from Wright in the 5th minute, and the other from Swetland in the 11th minute, which were both turned aside, before Lauryn Parent (Belchertown, Mass.) had the first shot on goal for the visitors, which was collected by Davis to keep the Lyons at bay.

With just under 14 minutes to play in the first stanza, Rachel Feliu (Elkridge, Md.) drove down the left side of the field and beat her defender, before sending a cross into the box, which found an open Dale, who's shot was blocked, before the rebound bounced right to Kellie Gambell (Middletown, Conn.), who slotted her second goal of the season to give the Pride a 1-0 lead with 13:11 to play in the first. The Pride would carry the one-goal advantage into the halftime break, despite a late chance from Wheaton's Kenza Farid (Hampton, N.H.), which was stopped by Davis.

Wheaton evened the score in the 67th minute on a goal from Kaylee Sye (Acton, Mass.), which was assisted by Amanda Dunton (Huntington Beach, Calif.), to even the score at one, before Springfield College countered with it's second goal of the game. After a shot wide from Nikki Kerr (Manchester, Conn.), Dale picked off a clearing attempt from Barbagallo, before splitting two defenders and getting behind the Lyons back line. With a point-blank opportunity, Dale tapped a shot past a diving Barbagallo for her team-leading 14th strike of the season with 20:15 to play in the contest.

The Lyons were able to bounce back once again, this time just 4:01 later as Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) set up a header strike from Nicole Moody (Dunstable, Mass.), to even the score at two apiece with 16:14 to play.

Springfield College looked to take back it's one-goal lead in the 79th minute when Wright forced a turnover deep in the Lyons' defensive end, as the senior stung a shot from the top of the box that hit the cross bar and landed on the foot of Mackenzie Luiz (Newington, Conn.), who missed the rebound chance just wide, keeping the score at two goals apiece.

It didn't take long for the Pride to emerge victorious from the contest, as Wright was able to secure the victory with her seventh goal of the season just 4:30 into the overtime period, helping Springfield College to its 11th win of the year.

Up next, the maroon and white will close out the regular season on Saturday, October 27 when it hits the road and takes on WPI at 5 p.m.
