Springfield, Mass. – October 16, 2019 – The Springfield College women's soccer program defeated conference foe Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Wednesday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
The Pride have now won five straight NEWMAC contests and boast an overall record of 10-3-1. The setback puts Babson at 5-7-1 overall and 1-3-1 in the conference standings. Springfield and Babson each earned four corner kicks in the match.
Springfield did not take long for their offense to get going. At 4:26, Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) pitched the ball into the box for Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.), who spun around the defender to score the game's first goal. At 15:21, Dale would be awarded a penalty shot, which she converted on to give the Pride a 2-0 lead. Later, Dale would strike again, as she danced past the Beaver defense to score an unassisted try pushing the Springfield lead to 3-0.
In the second half, the Pride controlled the possession well, stifling the Beaver attack. At 65:47, Chrissy Conley (Bristol, R.I.) would swipe the ball away from the Beavers and clear it perfectly to Adalia Malick (Bristol, Conn.), who punched it in for the Pride fourth unanswered goal.
Just a minute later, the Beavers would get offense from Maggie McCabe, making the score 4-1. Immediately after, at 69:23, the Pride responded with a header goal from Swetland off the feed from Heather Jennato (Hookset, N.H.). Swetland finished the game with two goals.
In the 83rd minute, Deanna Ruggiero scored for Babson, but the Pride lead was too strong to overcome.
The Pride will return to the field on Tuesday, October 22 at 3 pm when they travel to Smith College.
