Springfield, Mass. - September 25, 2018 - The Springfield College women's tennis team battled to a 7-2 win over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday night in the Springfield College Field House.
Competing for the first time in the 2018-19 campaign, the Pride wasted little time getting head coach Mike Louis his first win on Alden Street as the new head coach of both the men's and women's tennis programs notched a victory in his inaugural match on campus.
In doubles play, the duo of Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) picked up the first point of the day with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot. After the Wildcats earned an 8-5 at No. 2, Springfield would use an 8-4 win at No. 1 by Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
Parrish wasted no time cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, only to have the Wildcats answer back to make it a 3-2 contest with a straight-set win at No. 1. However, Springfield would win the remaining four singles matches en route to the 7-2 victory. Etter was victorious by a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 3, Malz breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5, Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 4, and Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) delivered her first collegiate victory with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph at No. 6.
Springfield will next play in the ITA New England Regional Tournament hosted at Williams College this weekend.
