Women's Tennis Downs Johnson & Wales, 6-2, In Darkness-Shortened Match

Providence, R.I. - September 24, 2019 - The Springfield College women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2019 campaign as it bested Johnson & Wales, 6-2, on Tuesday night in a match that was called due to darkness. 

Playing for the second time in the last three days, Springfield improved to 2-0 on the year. 

In doubles, Amanda Hill (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and Juliette Piazza (Portland, Conn.) were up 5-2 before their opponents retired, which gave Springfield its lone point in doubles action.

Springfield was dominant in the singles portion, winning five matches and owning a lead in the sixth before the match was called to darkness.  Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) eased her way to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 while Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) won the first set 7-5 before cruising to a 6-0 second-set win at No. 3.  Heidi Schuman (Averill Park, N.Y.) delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6, and Piazza clinched the match with her 7-6(6), 6-2 triumph at No. 5.  Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) added a 6-1, 7-5 victory at the top spot, while Rielly Malz (Glastonbury, Conn.) dropped the first set at No. 2, 6-2, but rebounded with a 7-5 win in the second before the match was called in the tiebreaker.  

Next up for Springfield will be the ITA Regional Championships which will be held at Middlebury College beginning on Friday.
