Wilkins Named Full-Time Assistant Track and Field Coach at Springfield College

Springfield, Mass. - August 16, 2018 - Springfield College Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, is pleased to announce that Brendan Wilkins has been named the full-time assistant track and field coach at Springfield College.

"I am very excited to become part of the Springfield College track and field program and athletic department," said Wilkins. "I look forward to working alongside Coach Miller and his coaching staff, as well as the student-athletes on the team. I plan to be a positive role model, help each student-athlete reach their goals on and off the track, and contribute to the first-class student-athlete experience at Springfield College."
Wilkins comes to Springfield College after spending the last four seasons as the assistant men's and women's indoor-outdoor track/cross country coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy. While with the Bears, Wilkins coached horizontal and vertical jumps, which included the daily practice and weight training plans for student-athletes that competed in high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump. Wilkins was also responsible for team social media postings and recruiting.
While at Coast Guard, Wilkins coached one NCAA Division III National Champion (men's long jump), three Division III New England champions (two men's pole vault, one men's long jump), one All New England champion (men's long jump) and one New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Champion (men's long jump), as he also helped student-athletes break a combined three program records.

"Being a former student-athlete at the Division III level, coupled with four years of coaching experience in the NEWMAC, Brendan will be an asset to our track and field coaching staff in the years to come," said Poisson. "We are excited to have him contribute to the preeminent student-athlete experience we strive for at Springfield College."

Wilkins competed for the men's track and field program at Ithaca College, as he also earned a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Sustainability in Practice in May of 2014. While with the Bombers, Wilkins served as a team co-captain, while he was also a seven-time ECAC high jump qualifier and a three-time All-Empire 8 honoree. Additionally, Wilkins earned the Larry Czarnecki Field Athlete Award and the Isadore "Doe" Yavits Sportsmanship Award. Wilkins completed a Masters of Sports Science in Sports Coaching with an Emphasis in NCAA Compliance from the United States Sports Academy this past July.

"I am very excited to be adding Coach Wilkins to our staff this year," said head track and field coach, Mike Miller. "With the addition of Coach Wilkins, we will be better able to achieve the goal of giving the student athletes the best experience possible while competing against the top teams in the nation. His leadership qualities, expertise and passion for track and field make him an invaluable addition to the team both on and off the track."
