Springfield, Mass. - February 16, 2019 - The Springfield College women's track and field team competed at the Triangle Classic on Saturday afternoon in the Springfield College Fieldhouse.
The day was highlighted by the efforts of Chloe Dewhurst (Lancaster, Mass.), who set a new school record in the high jump as she lept 1.72 meters or 5' 7.75", breaking the 35 year old record of 5' 7.50" set by Vanessa Copp in 1984.
Also highlighting the day for the Pride was junior Katherine Strain (Longmeadow, Mass) who had an outstanding showing in the 60 meter hurdles as she sprinted to a 9.46 first-place finish with teammate Elizabeth Herlihy (Shelton, Conn.) finishing just behind in second place with a mark of 9.72. Mikaela LoPriore (Niantic, Conn.) was also victorious in the shot put as she registered a toss of 11.99 meters or 39" 4.00".
Other top three finishers for the Pride were Tiffany Tenney (Orange, Mass.), who was the runner up in the 400 meter with a time of 1:00.44, while Kristen Madeia (Berlin, Conn.) was able to secure a top-three finish in the 600 meter with a mark of 1:38.75. Sophomore Abigail Murdock (Westerly, R.I.) was able to collect a second place spot in the 800 meter with a 2:26.95 time. Mia Facchini (Chicopee, Mass.) cleared 1.60 meters or 5' 3.00" in the high jump en route to a third place finish, and Emily Lacasee (West Hartford, Conn.) collected third in shot put with a throw of 11.45 meters or 37' 6.75".
Abby Tantorski (North Haven, Conn.) grabbed second place in the 200 meter with a finish of 26.47 and a fifth place with a 8.22 second mark in the 60 meter dash. Katie Evans (Holyoke, Mass.) also finished in the top five in the 200 meter as she clocked in at 27.44. Emory Fairchild (New Milford, Conn.) finished third with a time of 10:58.29 in the 3000 meter while Heather Fontaine (Brimfield, Mass.) was able to finish sixth with a mark of 11:29.63.
Among the Pride's other finishers on Saturday were freshman Sophia Andrew (Newtown, Conn.) who notched a time of 5:48.91 in the mile, Emma Radler (North Ferrisburgh, Vt) was able to clear 2.90 meters in the pole vault, and Nikki Bindell (Wantagh, N.Y.) was able to leap 4.51 meters in the long jump. The 4x400 relay team of Olivia Turk (Danbury, Conn.), Murdock, Madeia, and Tenney finished with a time of 4:13.99 to grab fourth place.
Next for Springfield will be the Division III New England Championships, which will take place on February 22-23 at Bowdoin.
