Women's Volleyball Opens Season With Sweep of Montclair State

Springfield, Mass. - August 30, 2019 - The Springfield College women's volleyball program hit .398 as a team to sweep Montclair State in the opening match of the 2019 Springfield College Invitational on Friday in Blake Arena.  The Pride won by the scores of 25-21, 25-15, 26-24.

Five different players recorded at least seven kills in the win for Springfield as Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) directed the offense with 38 assists.  Demi Spanos (West Harrison, N.Y.) had the best match of her young career, totaling 12 kills on 23 errorless attempts for a .522 hitting percentage, while Camryn Bancroft (Eastport, N.Y.) produced 11 kills, hitting .556 out of the middle.  Bridget Walsh (Garrison, N.Y.) added nine kills, and both Ashley Tanner (Manorville, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Bradley (Fairfax, Va.) registered seven kills.  Anagabrielle Sanchez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) returned to the Pride's lineup and produced a match-best 18 digs, helping key a defense that limited the Red Hawks to a .175 hitting percentage.

After jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start the match behind a pair of kills from Bradley, Springfield would allow Montclair to go on a 5-1 burst midway through the frame as the visitors earned a 19-16 advantage and forced the Pride into a timeout.  Out of the break, the Pride poured on a 6-1 run, with Spanos totaling two kills and a block before Montclair would commit their eighth attack error of the frame to give Springfield the 25-21 win.

The Pride's offense was especially dynamic in the second set, erupting for 18 kills at a .708 hitting percentage.  Paced by seven kills from Walsh, Springfield raced out to a 9-3 advantage and never looked back as it cruised to a 25-15 win.

In the third, Springfield trailed 22-21 before Katie vonKampen (East Setauket, N.Y.) came off the bench for a kill and a pair of blocks to put the hosts on top, 24-23.  After a Pride miscue evened the set at 24, Bancroft converted out of the middle and Labadorf delivered an ace to seal the three-set win.

Springfield will return to action on Saturday morning when it hosts Westfield State at 10:30am in Blake Arena.
