Medford, Mass. - October 18, 2019 - In their first match of the 2019 New England Challenge, the Springfield College women's volleyball team was defeated by host Tufts in straight sets on Friday evening. The Jumbos earned the win by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 25-16.
Springfield slipped to 16-7 on the year as Friday was just its third non-conference loss of the season and first in straight sets. Tufts improved to 18-0 win the win, as the Jumbos were ranked 13th in the country in the latest AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll.
For the Pride, Demi Spanos (West Harrison, N.Y.) produced a team-best nine kills, while both Katie vonKampen (South Setauket, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Bradley (Fairfax, Va.) had five kills. Sara Labadorf (Huntersville, N.C.) had 20 assists and 10 digs in the setback as Springfield was held to a .062 team hitting percentage, its lowest of the season.
After pulling within 9-8 in the opening set following an attack error by Tufts, Springfield surrendered a 9-2 run as the hosts gained a comfortable 18-10 cushion. The Pride would get no closer than six points as it dropped the 25-16 decision in a frame where it totaled 10 kills.
A kill from vonKampen gave Springfield the 7-6 edge early in the second set, only to have Tufts score 11 of the next 14 points to regain a 17-10 advantage. Following a bad set that pulled Springfield within 18-13, the Jumbos closed out the stanza on a 7-1 surge for the 25-14 win.
Tufts jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third and never looked back as it earned the 25-16 win to complete the sweep.
