Boston, Mass. - November 3, 2019 - The Springfield College women's cross country team raced in the 2019 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships at Franklin Park on Saturday.
MIT finished first in the 11-team competition with 19 points and outdistanced second-place Mount Holyoke who scored 80 points. Wellesley (92), WPI (116), Coast Guard (141) rounded out the top five, while Springfield's total of 195 points was good enough for eighth place on the day.
Heather Fontaine (Brimfield, Mass.) put together a strong performance for the Pride, posting a 24:11 to finish 36th among the 146 student-athletes in the 6k race. First-year Emily Szalai (Oak Ridge, N.J.) had an impressive race in her first NEWMAC experience with a 24:28, and was closely followed by classmate Brenna LaChapelle's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) time of 24:38. Maura Murphy (Ridgefield, Conn.) crossed the finish line in 24:46 and Rachel Wentnick (Metuchen, N.J.) was Springfield's fifth fastest runner on the afternoon with a 24:55.
Springfield will now turn its attention to the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships, which will be raced in Brunswick, Maine on November 16.
