Cambridge, Mass. – September 26, 2009 – The Springfield College women’s volleyball team defeated New York University in four games on Saturday morning and then swept the host MIT Engineers in the second day of the MIT Invitational. The Pride downed the Violets by the scores of 25-22, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22 before cruising past MIT, 25-21, 25-18, 25-17.

Springfield is now 12-2 on the year with the two wins and finished the weekend going 3-1 at the Invitational. With the win over MIT, Springfield finished in fifth place at this year’s MIT Invitational.

On Saturday morning against NYU, Lauren Torvi led Springfield with 16 kills in the match, while Sarah Lang-Rodean continued to produce for the Pride with 13 kills out of the middle. Meaghan Hart posted a team-best 14 digs in the victory.

After owning a 2-1 game led, Springfield found themselves down 20-14 in the fourth stanza. Head coach Joel Dearing pulled his troops together as the Pride rattled off 11 of the game’s next 13 points to complete the four-game victory.

The Pride was able to exact some revenge on MIT after losing a tough four-game match to the Engineers on Tuesday evening. Springfield’s offense was clicking on all cylinders as Lang-Rodean led the charge with 11 kills and All-American Heather Lively added 10. The difference in the match was SC’s defense, which was powered by an incredible performance by Hart. The sophomore libero recorded an amazing 20 digs in just three games to pace the Pride.

For her efforts over the weekend, Lang-Rodean was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Springfield will now gear up for a NEWMAC match at Clark on Tuesday evening.
