Northampton, Mass. – October 23, 2010 – The Springfield College womenÂ's volleyball team defeated conference rivals Wellesley and MIT in the second day Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational to finish in fifth place in the Gold Bracket. The Pride defeated the Blue 25-23, 25-20, 25-20 before downing MIT, 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21.
Springfield, which was seeded third in the Invitational, improves to 26-3 on the year. It marked the first time since 2006 that Springfield had defeated Wellesley in three games.
Leading the way for the Pride was All-Tournament selection Tessa Smolinski, who continued her hot play at outside hitter. The first-year totaled eight kills on 19 errorless swings against Wellesley before adding eight kills versus MIT.
Senior Sarah Lang-Rodean recorded 13 kills against MIT and led the squad with nine kills against MIT. Heather Lively had a standout performance against MIT as she posted 16 kills on 30 swings while hitting .466. She also chipped in with six kills against Wellesley.
Lauren Torvi added another eight kills in the win over Wellesley, while Meaghan Hart tallied 10 digs versus MIT.
Springfield has two more matches left in its regular season, the first coming on Tuesday evening at home against Mount Holyoke at 7:00 pm.
