Lexington, Ky. – November 11, 2010 – For the first time in their careers, the senior duo of Kelsea Hellyar and Sarah Lang-Rodean were selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-New England Region Team. Junior Lauren Torvi earned honorable mention status after a standout junior season.
Last season, Lang-Rodean earned honorable mention status. After earning all-region honors, both Lang-Rodean and Hellyar will now be considered for AVCA All-America status.
The trio has had the postseason awards pour in as all were selected the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team. Also recently announced, Hellyar was named to the New England WomenÂ's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) All-New England First Team, while Rodean and Torvi were selected to the second team.
Hellyar powered Springfield’s offense to the fourth-highest hitting percentage in the country this season. Handing out 1,137 assists and averaging 10.73 per game, which ranks 16th highest in the country, Hellyar took home all-conference honors for the second time in her career. The Fairhaven, Mass. product has also recorded 180 digs and 33 service aces this year.
Lang-Rodean had a breakout senior season for Springfield as she became the fifth player in program history to be selected as the NEWMAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year. The Mansfield Center, Conn. native ranks first in the conference and 16th nationally in hitting percentage. Hitting at a .380 clip this year, Lang-Rodean has posted 308 kills to go along with 74 blocks.
Torvi earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career after a standout junior campaign. Ranking second in the conference in hitting percentage, Torvi was a stalwart at the net all year, leading the league in blocks per game. She has registered 280 kills, hitting .361, and 124 blocks. On a national scale, the North Smithfield, R.I. native ranks in the top 30 in both blocking and hitting percentage.
