Waltham, Mass. — November 20, 2010 — Despite Meghan Biondolillo‘s 19 points, the Springfield College women’s basketball team fell victim to the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen, 80-64, tonight in a first-round game of the Brandeis Classic. SC, now 0-2, will play Connecticut College in the consolation bracket Sunday at 1 pm.
In the first game of the day, Brandeis defeated Connecticut College, 68-36.
In the second game of the day, six different players – three for each team – scored in double figures, but it was Rhode Island College which led for nearly the entire game. After a sluggish start to the game, Springfield junior guard Kelly Murphy (Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville) scored on a put-back 3:31 into the contest. RIC junior guard Stephanie Coro (No. Providence, R.I./No. Providence) answered on the other end with a traditional three-point play two possessions later and the Anchorwomen never trailed again, holding the Pride at bay.
For RIC (2-0), Coro and junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) tied for game-high honors with 21 points each, while sophomore Courtney Burns (Rockland, Mass./Rockland) had 12 points. Riley also led all players with 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double, while Coro had four steals to lead all players. The Anchorwomen forced Springfield into 20 turnovers while committing only nine of their own, to finish with a 19-2 edge in points off turnovers. Rhode Island also outscored Springfield, 19-4, from the line.
