Orlando, Fla. – March 17, 2010 — The Berry men’s tennis team picked up a second consecutive victory on Wednesday by defeating Springfield College, 6-3, in a Spring Break match in Orlando. With the win, Berry improves to 2-3 this season. Springfield falls to 1-3 overall, and 0-2 on the Spring Break trip.
For the second day in a row, Mark Saporsky’s match was the clinching victory for the Vikings. After falling 1-6 in the first set, he rallied to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2 for the three-set win.
Marcelo Peterlini downed Trevor Romanzi 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, while Daniel Mician defeated Tim Tunis by the same score at No. 2 singles. The two players also combined for a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3, over Tunis and Romanzi.
The Vikings claimed a 2-1 edge after the doubles portion of the match. Elliott Echols and Mark Surls won 8-1 over Kevin Leahy and Ben Burnapy at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles. however, Zach O’Leary and Jesse Boyd were victorious, 8-6.
Berry’s Steven Weeks picked up a win in dramatic fashion as he beat John Schrank, 14-12, in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Weeks won a tiebreaker 7-4 to claim a 7-6 win in the first set, but lost 3-6 to Schrank in the second set.
Springfield picked up a win at the No. 3 singles position, where Burnap won in three sets. O’Leary also picked up a singles win at the No. 4 position by defeating Echols, 10-6, in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Springfield will continue to play on Thursday (Mar. 18) with two matches, one against Augustana at 9:00 am, and then a second versus St. Scholastica at 6:30 pm.
