Women's Volleyball Powers Past Clark, 3-0

Worcester, Mass. – September 21, 2010 – The Springfield College women’s volleyball team continued to roll through conference play as it swept Clark on Tuesday evening in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest. The Pride won the match by the game scores of 25-13, 25-11, 25-16.

With the victory the Pride, who is receiving votes in the most recent release of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll, improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Cougars, meanwhile, have dropped four straight since winning the Worcester City Championship back on September 12. ClarkÂ's record stands at 3-5 overall and 0-3 in NEWMAC play.

Springfield cruised to the decisive victory as it received 10 kills from senior Sarah Lang-Rodean, while reigning NEWMAC player of the week Kim Giaquinto added nine kills. Kelsea Hellyar continued to distribute the ball well as she totaled 33 assists in the three-game match.

SC raced out to early leads in each game buoyed by strong play at the net from several players including junior Lauren Torvi. Springfield also kept the Cougars at bay as it continued to serve the ball tough throughout the match.

  After capturing game one, the Pride found itself tied at 5-5 in the second game before registering 15 of the next 17 points to take a commanding 20-7 lead before settling for a 25-13 win.

  Game three proved to be the nightÂ's closest game before Springfield went on one of its patented runs to build up a comfortable lead and take the game and the match, 25-16.

  The Cougars were paced by Kristin McGinty, who totaled a team-best five kills and Amira Tranchell who ended with four. Emily Corbett paced the Clark defensive attack with a team-high nine digs.

Over the weekend, Springfield will travel to compete in the MIT Invitational. The Pride will kick of their play on Friday when it takes on Endicott at 4:00 before challenging Colby at 8:00 pm.
