South Hadley, Mass. – October 22, 2011 – The Springfield College dropped a four-set match with Tufts before it rallied for a for a four-set win against Middlebury at the Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational on the campus of Mount Holyoke College.
Junior Mary Consol was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. With the split, the Pride now stand at 27-2 after a tough weekend of competition in which it played the second-ranked team in New England (Bowdoin), fourth-ranked (Tufts), and sixth-ranked (Middlebury). Heading into this weekend of play, SC was ranked third in the region.
Tufts tripped up the Pride by the scores of 29-27, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, while Springfield prevailed over Middlebury, 19-25, 27-25, 25-22, 25-17.
In the loss to the Tufts Jumbo, Lauren Torvi’s 17 kills and five blocks led the way, while Tessa Smolinski chipped in nine kills and 16 digs. Consol added seven kills and three blocks and Itza Nieves posted a team-best 18 digs. Meaghan Hart was credited with 11 digs and two aces in the loss.
Torvi had her way versus Middlebury as she produced 22 kills, while Consol added seven kills. Smolinski pounded out 12 kills and Nieves notched 19 digs.
