Women's Basketball Storms Past MIT, 60-43

Cambridge, Mass. – January 14, 2012Kelly Slattery tallied a game-high 17 points and was one of four players to score in double figures as the Springfield College women’s basketball team picked up a 60-43 win on the road at MIT in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Springfield raises its record to 9-6 overall, 5-3 in the NEWMAC. MIT falls to 7-7 overall, 3-5 in the league.

Springfield has now won seven of its last nine games.

Springfield trailed only once in this contest, at 3-2. Other than that, the Pride led the entire way.

Slattery, a senior forward from Somers, Conn., topped SC with those 17 points. She also had four rebounds, and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Junior guard Colleen Dignum (Albany, N.Y.) was next in line with 12 points, and was 5-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range. Freshman forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) was next with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. And then came senior guard Kelly Murphy (Mechanicville, N.Y.) with 10 points and 10 rebounds. In addition, senior guard Andrea Butler (Cohoes, N.Y.) finished up with seven assists and two steals.

  After trading baskets to start the game, Springfield generated a 10-2 spurt that resulted in a 12-5 advantage after three minutes expired. A basket by sophomore Rachel Hunt followed by two free throws from freshman Mari Kordell brought MIT within three at the 16:15 mark. The Pride used an 11-4 spurt during the next six minutes to increase its margin to 23-13. Following and MIT three, the visiting Pride mounted an 18-7 run en route to a 41-23 lead at halftime.

  Springfield scored eight of the first 10 points of the second stanza, establishing its largest margin of the day at 24 points (49-25) with 16:39 left to play.
