Boston, Mass. – September 28, 2013 – The Springfield College women’s volleyball team picked up at three-set victory at Emerson on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) showdown. The Pride won by the scores of 26-24, 25-19, 25-21.
This marked the first time these two teams played as conference opponents, with this being Emerson’s first year in the NEWMAC. Springfield is now 12-1, 4-1 in league play while Emerson drops to 10-5, 2-2.
The duo of Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) and Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) continued their tremendous play of late to fuel the Pride to the conference victory. Smolinski posted a team-high 13 kills to go along with nine digs and three aces, while Holt produced 12 kills at a .550 clip out of the middle while adding a match-best five blocks.
Kerry Purcell (Massapequa, N.Y.) had an especially strong game at right side for the Pride, producing eight kills on 16 errorless swings. Whitney Miller (Cuba, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs in leading Springfield to a .308 hitting percentage for the afternoon. Defensively, Meghan Kinee (Williamstown, N.J.) recorded 10 digs.
The Pride will play another conference match on Tuesday night when it hosts Wheaton at 7:00 pm.
