Box Score Northampton, Mass. - October 24, 2014 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team began the Volleyball Hall of Fame Invitational hosted at Smith College on Friday evening with a three-game sweep of Trinity College.
Springfield won by the set scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-20 to improve to 19-8 on the season. The loss drops Trinity to 11-9 on the year. The start of the match was delayed over an hour due to a power outage in the area.
Entering the weekend ranked 8th in New England in the initial NCAA Regional rankings.
The Pride opened up the match on a 6-1 run, only to have the Bantams rally to take a 17-16 advantage. However, Springfield was able to take the first set, 25-23.
Springfield continued its strong play in the second set, gaining an early 13-6 cushion. Elise Brogan (Andover, Mass.) and Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, N.Y.) capped off the frame with a big block to give the Pride the 25-17 win.
With the score knotted at 16 in the third, head coach Moira Long went to her bench, and Whitney Miller (Cuba, N.Y.) powered the Pride to five of the final six points of the match for the 25-20 victory.
McGayhey led the Pride with 10 kills at a .500 clip to go along with four blocks, while Jennifer Hurtiz (Longmeadow, Mass.) chipped in nine kills and 14 digs. Amy Entel (Berkley, Mass.) was credited with a match-best 19 digs and Marnae Mawdsley (Bolston, Conn.) handed out 32 assists.
The Pride will play two more regionally ranked programs on Saturday when it faces Bowdoin at Amherst College beginning at 1:00 before heading back to Smith College for a 5:00 pm match versus Middlebury.
