Springfield, Mass. – April 19, 2014 - The Springfield College men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over visiting Emerson on Saturday.
It was the first conference win of the season for the Pride, who improve to 7-7 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC in the final home match of the season.
Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.), Joe Giannelli (Watertown, Conn.) and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) each handled the Lions in singles play, cruising to 6-0, 6-0 wins. At No. 2 singles, Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) easily won 6-1, 6-0. Josh Robinson (Southold, N.Y.) won No. 5 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-1 and Jordan Karnes (Warwick, R.I.) completed the singles sweep with a 7-6, 6-0 win.
The Pride also dominated doubles play, led by Danielewicz and Beynor, who won second doubles by a score of 8-0. At first doubles, DeVarennes and Giannelli won 8-3 while Robinson and Cody Rodrigues (Westfield, Mass.) earned an 8-1 win at third doubles.
The Pride will end the season on Tuesday, heading to Hunter for a 6:00 p.m. start.
