Box Score North Dartmouth, Mass. - September 12, 2014 - The Springfield College football team picked up its first win of the season as it bested UMass Darmouth, 41-20, at Cressy Field on Friday night.
The Pride, which played on a Friday evening for the second-straight week, now stands at 1-1 on the year, as does UMass Dartmouth. Tonight marked just third-ever meeting between the two programs, and the first since 2001.
Jonathan Marrero (Boston, Mass.) scored three times on the ground and finished with 97 rushing yards, while Keith Rodman (Northvale, N.J.) led all players with 121 yards on 15 carries. Defensively, Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) totaled 10 tackles, including two sacks, and Danny Macalena (Congers, N.Y.) posted 10 stops and added one of Springfield's three interceptions.
For the game, Springfield outgained the hosts, 478-304, as the Pride rushed for 435 yards as a team.
After a seven-yard run by Rodman capped off the game's opening drive and gave Springfield a 7-0 advantage just 2:34 into the contest, UMass Dartmouth answered back with 12:18 to go in the second quarter on a one-yard plunge by Preston Cooper to tie the game.
Marrero punched in his first score of the game from four yards outs at the 6:31 mark, only to have Cooper once again plunge in from five yards with 1:21 on the clock to send the teams into the half knotted at 14 apiece.
Springfield took control of the game in the second half, scoring 20 unanswered points to seize a 34-14 advantage. Marrero touchdown runs of one-yard and five-yards sandwiched Stephen Speidel's (Sussex, N.J.) first career score which came on a 14-yard jaunt with 10:12 left in regulation.
Facing a 20-point deficit late in the fourth quarter, the Corsairs answered right back on a 34-yard scamper from Cooper to make it a two-score game. However, on the ensuing drive, Speidel found running room and scored from 20 yards with 3:17 remaining to seal the victory.
Springfield will continue its non-conference schedule next Saturday when it hosts Mount Ida for a 1:00 pm kickoff on Stagg Field.
