Box Score Williamstown, Mass. - December 12, 2015 - The Springfield College men's basketball team let a 15-point halftime lead slip away and Williams College rallied for a 72-62 victory on Saturday in Chandler Gymnasium.
Playing for the third time this week, Springfield dropped its second-straight contest as it moved to 3-5 on the year, while Williams had its two-game skid snapped to improve to 6-2.
Josh Altman (Rockport, Mass.) led Springfield with 11 points, all of which came in the first half. Josh Downes (East Sandwich, Mass.) added nine points, and Andy McNulty (West Springfield, Mass.) chipped in eight points and six assists.
Facing an 11-7 hole at the 15:20 mark of the half, consecutive triples by McNulty kick started a 16-0 run, which featured four three-pointers over the next five minutes, as the Pride's lead ballooned to 23-11. Williams answered back to climb within 23-17 with 8:28 on the clock, only to have the Pride put together another big run thanks to long range shooting. Using four trifectas, a 16-1 burst by the visitors gave Springfield 39-18 with 3:24 remaining. Springfield would head into the half with a 39-24 edge, as it put together a dominanting first 20 minutes of play, shooting 57.7% from the floor, including an 8-for-13 performance from downtown. Coming into the game, the most three-pointers Springfield had hit in an entire game was six.
Williams came out of the second half and took control from the opening whistle, pouring on a 21-4 run to take a 45-43 lead just 7:45 into the half. A Downes bucket in transition put Springfield, 50-49, with just over seven minutes left in regulation, but that would be the visitors final lead of the contest. The Ephs outscored the visiting Pride, 48-23, in the second half and held on for the 10-point victory.
Springfield will return to play on January 2 when it hosts Husson in the Hampton Inn West Springfield/Naismith Classic at 5:30 pm.
