Men's Basketball Rolls Past Emerson, 70-57

Boston, Mass. - February 14, 2015 - Junior forward Larry Piretra (Oakland, N.J.) posted his second double-double of the season, registering 12 points and 10 rebounds, aiding the Springfield College men's basketball program in a 70-57 road victory over Emerson College on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Springfield improves to 16-7 on the season, and 8-4 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while the Lions fall to 10-12 overall and 4-8 in league play.

Springfield shot 28-for-54 (51.9%) on the day, outscored the hosts 32-21 in the paint, and committed just seven turnovers, while holding Emerson to 23-of-59 (39%) from the field.

Along with Piretra, the Pride was led by senior point guard Sean Martin (Rindge, N.H.), who posted a game-high 13 points, while also adding four assists, one block and three steals to his line,  Junior guard Alex Garstka (Westfield, Mass.) scored in double figures for the third straight game off the bench, netting added 10 points on the day.

For Emerson, Sean Duffy (Berwyn, Pa.) led with 11 points, while Tyson Hallowell (Lincoln, Mass.) registered a team-high five rebounds in the loss.

Springfield started the contest on a 9-0 run, capped off by a lay-up from Martin after a steal from senior guard Nick Sienkiewicz (Cranston, R.I.). Emerson would cut its deficit down to five after a bucket from Austin Pinckney (Miami, Fla.), but four-straight points from Garstka gave the Pride an 11-point, 18-7 lead with 10:59 remaining in the opening half.

A pair of free-throws from Martin extended the Pride's lead to 15, capping a 10-0 run over 4:01, before a three-point play from senior Tim Swenson (Millbury, Mass.) gave Springfield a 29-11 lead with 6:03 left in the first.

A three-pointer from Hallowell cut the Pride's lead down to 11 at the 2:06 mark, but Piretra's second triple of the half gave the Pride a 32-18 lead going into the halftime break.

Sienkiewicz scored four points in the opening 4:13 of the second half to give the Pride an 18-point advantage, before five unanswered points from the Lions brought the hosts back to within 13.

Holding a 23-point cushion after a lay-up from Swenson with 8:16 to go in the contest, Springfield cruised the rest of the way, picking up its 16th win of the season.

Springfield will play its final home game of the regular season on Wednesday when it hosts Clark at 7:00 pm
