Box Score Springfield, Mass. - February 20, 2016 - In its regular-season finale, the Springfield College women's basketball program picked up an 85-39 victory over Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
With the win Springfield extends its winning streak to three games and improves to 10-6 in conference play, 16-9 overall. With the loss, Wellesley falls to 2-14 in the NEWMAC, and 4-19 overall. From the floor, the Pride were a dominant 36-of-63 (57.1%) from the floor, while Wellesley shot 12-of-44 (27.3%). Springfield also held a 44-19 advantage on the glass in the victory.
Playing in their last game in Blake Arena, the duo of Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) combined for 33 points, while Gins notched seven rebounds, and Lewis posted five boards and six assists in the win. Additionally, freshman Gracie Restituyo (Jersey City, N.J.) recorded a career-best 18 points to go along with 11 boards, while sophomore forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) had 16 points and six rebounds.
For the Blue, Kayla Jang (South Pasadena, Calif.) posted a game-high 21 points, benefitting from five three-pointers, while also posting a team-best six rebounds in the loss.
With 5:38 left in the first quarter, Springfield College took a 9-8 advantage, following a jumper from Lewis, sparking a 13-0 run to end the stanza. During the run, the Pride had five different players register points, as Carli Brent (Wilmington, Mass.) notched her three first-half points, giving Springfield a 20-8 lead at the end of one.
It was all Springfield in the second quarter, as the hosts took a 28-8 lead when freshman Chelsea McAllister (Springfield, Vt.) took a great feed from Lewis and finished at the rim with 7:23 left in the half, extending its lead to 20. The Pride would gain its largest lead of 34 points with a jumper from Lewis with 1:10 remaining in the half, and went into the locker room with a 45-11 advantage over the Blue.
In the third quarter, the Pride extended its lead to 40 points when Restituyo took a pass from Gins and finished at the rim to make it 55-15 with 4:39 left in the frame, before a triple from Gins closed out the quarter's scoring, giving Springfield a 65-20 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Pride would maintain an over 40-point lead for the duration of the contest, as it received good minutes off the bench from freshman Sam Spadaro (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Georgia Ford (Scarborough, Maine). McAllister would knock down a deep two to finish off the game, sealing the 85-39 win for Springfield.
