Springfield, Mass. – October 11, 2008 – The Springfield College field hockey team edged the visiting Wheaton College Lyons, 1-0, in a tightly-contested New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Saturday afternoon on Stagg Field.
With the win, the Pride improves to a perfect 4-0 in league play and 8-4 overall, while the Lyons drop to 6-6, 1-2 in league action.
The game’s only goal came with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation. After Wheaton goalie Andrea Bagley stopped the Pride’s initial shot on goal, Morgan Rein found the loose ball and lobbed a back-handed shot into the back of the cage to give the home squad a 1-0 advantage.
The Lyons came right back down the field on their ensuing possession and it appeared as though they would tie the game at one. However, a defensive save by Jill Urtz in front of the Pride’s goal kept the visitors off the scoreboard.
Springfield held a 22-4 advantage in the shot department in the contest. Bagley finished with nine saves in goal, while Alison McCarthy and Kelleanne Salazar combined for the shutout. Salazar made three saves in the second half.
