Springfield, Mass – September 24, 2008 – Emily Murray (Boonton, N.J.) collected a rebound off a shot and found the back of the cage for the lone goal of the game as the Springfield College field hockey team downed visiting Amherst, 1-0, on Wednesday evening.
The Pride, currently ranked 20th in the country, improved to 4-2 on the year, while the Lord Jeffs drop to 3-2 on the year.
The Pride had a terrific chance to add the first tally of the game as Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) was awarded a penalty stroke at the 11:39 mark. However, Amherst keeper Emily Vitale made an outstanding save on the All-American to keep the Pride off the scoreboard.
Springfield finally got on the board with 22:24 left in the contest as Murray found the back of the cage for her third goal of the year. After a teammateÂ's shot was blocked off a penalty corner, Murray blasted home a rebound in front of the cage.
Catherine Calvert nearly equalized the game in the second half for Amherst but a defensive save by Katherine McCarthy (Conway, Mass.) preserved the Pride victory.
Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) finished 11 saves in the game en route to the shutout victory for Springfield. Vitale made 13 saves of her own in the loss.
For the contest, the Pride outshot the visitors, 20-16, while the Lord Jeffs owned a 12-10 edge in penalty corners.
Springfield returns to action this Saturday when it travels to take on No. 17 Babson in its conference opener at 1:00 pm.
